Parents with diabetic kids do a lot of worrying when their youngsters are at camp or school, usually having no idea what their glucose levels are. Some kids are diligent and honest, keeping a vigilant eye on their blood sugar, but many are not and often end up as medical emergencies. Now Roche is releasing its new Accu-Check Connect system that lets a parent or caretaker know when someone in their care tested their blood sugar and what the results were. And all this is done easily and without bugging the diabetic.
The system uses the Accu Check Aviva Connect Bluetooth-enabled glucometer to send readings to a paired Android or iOS smartphone running the Accu-Check Connect app. The app can be set to automatically send text messages to a select group of people with the readings following each test. The data is also uploaded to a portal that can be accessed using a boring old computer anytime.
“Even after two years, it’s still a constant worry when my son is off at school or out of my care. Did he check his blood sugar? What is his blood sugar? Did he take his shot? Did he count his carbs? And I can’t always be there to check him,” said Lisa Oberndorfer in the Roche announcement, whose 15-year-old son, Will, has Type 1 diabetes. “The availability of a diabetes management system that allows me to be connected and see my son’s blood sugar levels and how he’s tracking from my phone virtually anywhere – without constantly calling and texting my son – would certainly put my mind at ease.”
